Our speakers share their stories to help others and become part of a community creating Circles of Support. Speakers condense their stories to 15 minutes and focus on the lessons learned, to reduce the learning curve for other women.

Reach out. We’re open to hearing your story.

A word from our speakers

Sharing our experiences can build one’s confidence and faith. As a sole proprietor in a competitive, difficult industry, Spoken Lives is a foundational support for me, as I endeavour to stay true to myself and my goals. Through Spoken Lives, I am reminded that we can create communities that support one another rather than destroy ourselves through needless competition. Thank you Elizabeth Verwey for helping us to build new approaches that are sustainable and supportive.

Spoken Lives gave me the opportunity to reflect on myself and to weave together my activities – writing, weightlifting and canoeing, to make sense of how my ‘third act’ was unfolding. It was also an opportunity to share a more complete picture of myself with friends who came to listen, who were familiar with only part of my story. I received great feedback and the process itself has inspired more writing.

After 36 years of marriage, we went through a divorce. I had to learn to live alone for the first time in my life. I turned to friends during this life makeover and invited them to my new place for a series of Nurture Nights. We shared food and stories at these pot luck evenings. Women shared their challenges and the life lessons they learned while meeting their life challenges.

These events grew as friends invited their friends and we needed to move these gatherings to a public space to make room for everyone who wanted to join these wonderful evenings.

Now, we’re creating circles of support and making “herstory” by sharing our stories with one another in a more formal way. Four speakers share from the stage and other stories are shared at the tables. I’m looking for awesome women in other cities to open chapters to support the women they know.

Authentic Women. Genuine Community. Real Stories.

Hispanic/Latin Chapter

Hispanic/Latin Chapter

Curated by: Irma Paredes

In 1991 I began to produce events in Toronto to SHARE the brilliance of my own mother, Teresa Paredes; a woman who raised seven children with her late Husband, Juan Paredes. Under political upheavals during the Military Coup in Chile, we made our way to Canada in the winter of 1975 with nothing but the clothes on our backs and only $9 in my father's wallet.

So, you could imagine the surprise when we found out that she had gone back to Chile for the sole purpose of publishing her poetry book, Poesia Errante. We never even knew she was writing!  My parents inspired HOPE, birthed perseverance and developed my mindset to NEVER give up. This is the foundation of my passion and my own commitment to uplift Canadian Hispanic/Latin-American Women originated.

I produce events to inspire, connect and empower women to be free to express their own stories in safe and uplifting environments. Through events such as Noche en Poesia, the production of the First ever Vagina Monologues in Spanish and launching a Hispanic Women Network, I have been able to connect and embrace women with amazing stories. Stories that I believe need to be heard through Spoken Lives Historias Mujeres Comparten Event Series. As a perfect blend these truths will be shared in both English and Spanish as we grow and expand our dreams in Canada.

I am a best-selling author, an inspirational speaker and women's empowerment coach committed to helping women remain buoyant and find their strength when faced with challenges in life.

After braving immigration to Canada and surviving thyroid cancer and as a single mother of 4 beautiful children, I understand adversity and hardship. Despite the lemons that life handed me, I dug deep and found resilience. I started the Shining Star Movement. Today, I empower other women to become their own North Stars, their own guiding force and live their lives by design.
